A representment is a transaction presented to the issuer by the acquirer, when the merchant has disputed a chargeback and requests a reversal of a chargeback. A debit card chargeback or credit card chargeback occurs when a cardholder disputes a transaction and says that they did not make the transaction. A written form of complaint is required detailing the visa dispute and is sent from the cardholder to the issuing bank, who then contacts the merchant account. A successful chargeback results in the return of funds to the cardholders account for the specified amount of said disputed transaction.
The representment process allows merchants to present evidence to prove that the chargeback process is not necessary. Evidence for representment can include signed delivery slips, proof the customer provided the correct CVV, matching billing and shipping addresses and many other ways.
If sufficient evidence is provided, in the correct format, within the response time limits, an issuer will reverse a chargeback and the merchant will be refunded.
