Offline Debit

An offline debit card is a card that combines the characteristics of both a debit card and a credit card.

An offline debit card allows the user to pay for goods and services directly from their bank account, using a form of direct debit, as the transaction creates a debit against the cardholder’s account. However there is a delay of 24 to 72 hours before the amount of a purchase is debited from the account, due to the card being “offline” meaning the account is not accessed directly. Additionally, unlike a traditional MasterCard or Visa debit card, no PIN is required during the transaction, only a signature.

An offline debit card will often have a maximum daily limit, if it does not then the limit of the card is based on the amount of funds in the cardholder’s account.

The transaction must adhere to VISA/MasterCard debit regulations and the merchant is required to pay a discount fee. Cashback is not available.

Offline debit cards are also known as “cheque cards”, however these are no longer used in the UK.
